Modernization Radar 2022

Race to Modernize

Business benefit

accrues to those who

Modernize

now

Infosys Modernization Radar 2022 found that quick modernization leads to increased reliability, more resilience, increased revenues, and most important, a better customer experience for all.

We polled 1,500 senior technology leaders and executives to know how far they have reached in this modernization journey. Of these, over 40% were members of the C-suite. We found that the pool of legacy applications is disappearing quickly. Firms that modernize now will make their way, and those that don't will be left behind.

“As everyone moves to cloud and new technologies demand significant mindshare, firms are now racing to modernize these legacy systems.”

Shaji Mathew

Executive Vice President, Infosys

In fact, 50% of legacy will be modernized in

two years, and 70% - 90% in

five years

Firms are modernizing their application landscape very quickly. In fact, aggressive timelines suggest that just 10% of the legacy estate will be left five years from now, with over 50% modernized in the next two years.

Companies that wait too long cannot survive.

But skills and talent are a problem.

Almost 88% of current legacy assets will modernize in the next five years, with firms benefiting from cloud and other exponential technologies. But, CIOs in our survey are worried that they don't have skills in-house to pivot successfully to this customer-centric modern era.

Phased and coexistent methodologies are less

disruptive than big-bang

There are various approaches to modernization. But a Phased (“strangler”) or coexistent method is less disruptive, ensuring business continuity during modernization of critical systems.

“Giving the whole firm a vision for transformation ensures that changes happen across people, process, and technology. This sort of roadmap, business case, and overarching vision was a key factor in the three-year transformation of Infosys into a digitally native company.”

Gautam Khanna

Vice President and Global Head – Modernization Practice, Infosys

Exponential technologies are dominant

modernization drivers

Now that the cloud is ubiquitous, what other technologies and ways of working are actually driving firms to modernize? We found that data and analytics ranked the highest, followed closely by APIs, AI, and microservices.

To catch up with high performers,

planning is key

Unlocking modernization success relies on having a valid business case for modernization that starts from the top of the organization. A well-planned modernization roadmap with defined commercial outcomes is key. The speed of modernization will act as a differentiator.

Modernization is now on the executive

agenda and should become a crucial part

of organizations' strategic budgets.

We've found that those who modernize now will...

Realize cloud benefits

Increase resiliency

Gain value from exponential technologies

Create a more scalable and digital backbone

Provide better customer experiences

Now is the time to modernize.
